Snowshoe Hikes – Shady Rest
Shadyrest Campgrounds are located off the 395 about ¼ mile past the Visitor’s Center on the right. The entrance is directly across the street from McDonald’s. This is a multiuse area for snowshoing, snowmobiling and cross country skiing. There are designated parking areas. Dogs must be kept on leash and dog waste must be picked up and taken out.
There are lots of trails that are groomed specifically for cross country skiers. Please be respectful and snowshoe off to the side or better yet, go through the trees and make your own trail. That’s the beauty of snow shoeing … you can go almost anywhere. Plus you will avoid the crowds and really feel like you are in the wilderness.
The length and time required is up to you. You can do a fairly easy 30 minute loop or head out along one of the snowmobile paths “forever.”
I have seen coyotes many times on this hike and after a long winter they are really hungry. Another good reason to keep your doggie on leash.
